Gunung Kidul (Antaranews Jogja) - Five sub-districts in Gunung Kidul District, Yogyakarta special autonomous province, are facing water shortage in the current prolonged drought.

The drought-affected sub-districts were Girisubo, Rongkop, Ngawen, Gedangsari, and Semanu, Edy Basuki, head of the Gunung Kudul disaster mitigation office, said here, Wednesday.

"We have been distributing clean water to those areas, despite limited budget for water distribution," he said.

Drought hit Dadapayu village in Semanu sub-districts; Jurangjero, Sambirejo, and Besi villages in Ngawen sub-district; Watugajah, Mertelu, and Hargomulyo villages in Gedangsari sub-district; Songbanyu, Tileng, Karangawen, Jepitu, and Nglindur villages in Girisubo sub-district; and Melikan village in Rongkop sub-district.

"The five sub-districts are in the red zone, meaning they are extremely in need of clean water," he said.

In fact, all 77 villages in 15 sub-districts in Gunung Kidul with 132,491 people or 38,937 families, have experienced water shortage, he said.

"Since June 4, we have distributed 3,360 tanks of clean water. Each tank carries some five thousand to six thousand liters of water," he said.
