Sleman, Yogyakarta, (Antaranews Jogja)- Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X is scheduled to officially open a Tricolor Vanda Orchid Festival in Titi Orchids Park located in Sleman District, Yogyakarta Province.
The festival was being held from July 1 to 5, 2018, Endang Semiarti, chairperson of the event`s organizing committee, said here, Sunday.
"Tricolor vanda is famous and beautiful endemic orchid growing in Mount Merapi slope," she said.
The fourth Merapi orchid festival is aimed at promoting the tricolor Vanda orchid as an iconic flora of Sleman.
The event is also aimed at improving awareness of local inhabitants of Sleman to help preserve the Merapi orchid which is prone to extinction due to eruption of the volcano.
The Sleman district administration has also encouraged local farmers to plant various orchids in addition to the three color ones.
The festival is highlighted with various activities such as orchid exhibitions and bazaar.
The local government hopes that the festival will attract many tourists who could enjoy several other tourist attractions in the district.
Indonesia is believed to have at least five thousand species of orchids.
