Yogyakarta (Antaranews Jogja) - International Council of Women`s vice presudent-elect from Indonesia Giwo Rubiyanto Wiyogo has been appointed to be in charge of women`s issues in Asia and the Pacific region.

"Based on job distribution for ICW vice presidents, issue of gender equality in Asia Pacific will be my task," she said after ICW`s board of directors` meeting at Grand Inna Malioboro, here on Wednesday evening.

The meeting chaired by ICW president Jung Sook Kim also distributed tasks for the US and European Union to other new directors for 2018-2021.

Giwo said gender equality in the Asia Pacific region would be her main focus as one of the board members of the organization under the UN auspices as inequality is still serious.

She said solving the inequality issue in the Asia Pacific region is also one of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2035.

Inequality problems still needed to be fought include problems relating to health especially of the seniors, early marriage, death rate of pregnant women and births, she said.

"Gender problems like these are still found abundant in the Asia Pacific region. In Indonesia the death rate of pregnant women and birth is still recorded at 105 per 100,000 births," Giwo, who is also the chairperson of the Indonesian Women Congress (Kowani) said.

In view of the seriousness of the problems she said she would activate all members of women organizations in the region to cooperate in the fight for gender equality in all fronts.

The meeting of the board of directors that ended series of the 35th ICW General Assembly activities so far assured that the new seven-point resolution produced would be submitted to the UN meeting on March 17-18 in 2019.
